For the Whole Community
A Maori Cultural Centre serving the needs of the whole community will be built at 290 Ferry Road, Christchurch – the site of the former Te Wai Pounamu Māori Girls' College. It will function both as a church and conference centre.
The conference centre features an auditorium that accommodates 200 people (in theatre-style seating). In addition, three meeting and event rooms can accommodate 64, 32 and 20 delegates.
The auditorium and meeting rooms will incorporate audio-visual equipment and wireless internet. The auditorium also has a large stage and outdoor courtyard, with a commercial kitchen and dining room for over 200 delegates.
The Anglican Māori Church – Te Hepara Pai – will use the auditorium as its regular meeting place.
The complex also will contain the offices of the Bishop, Te Whare Wananga and Rangatahi, as well as other community initiatives and services.
Te Waipounamu is handy to the Central Business District (CBD) and is on the bus route from the city to Sumner Beach.
